Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has reportedly been left ‘shocked and gutted’ after he was left out of England’s World Cup squad.

Thomas Tuchel will name his 26-man England squad for the 2026 World Cup on Friday but one name has already been ruled out with Maguire set to remain at home.

Maguire, 33, was included in Tuchel’s last international squad in March but the centre-back will reportedly not be heading Stateside. The United defender recovered from early season injury problems to be a crucial part of Michael Carrick’s backline as the Red Devils sealed a return to the Champions League.

According to talkSPORT, Maguire has been left stunned by the decision, as he said on his omission: “I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had.

“I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I wish the players all the best.”

It’s added that Chelsea’s Levi Colwill is under consideration for a place in the final squad despite only returning from a serious ACL injury suffered in pre-season.

Colwill has won five England caps, with the last of those coming under Tuchel in the defeat to Senegal last June before he sustained the major injury.

England’s centre-back pairing for the tournament is expected to be Marc Guehi and Ezri Konsa, who are nailed on to be included in the squad. John Stones and Dan Burn will also be in the mind of Tuchel to be a part of the squad.

Kobbie Mainoo is also expected to have earned a place in the squad having enjoyed a resurgence under Carrick. However, his inclusion could come at the expense of Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.

Tuchel’s three goalkeepers are set to be Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson and James Trafford. But Brighton stopper Jason Steele, who has played as many Premier League minutes as everyone reading this so far this season, is reportedly set to travel to the tournament as a training keeper.
