The Queen was ‘very keen’ for the former-Prince Andrew to take on a ‘prominent role in the promotion of national interests’.

Mr Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested in February and released under investigation. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

The statement was part of a trove of files related to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s appointment as a trade envoy, released on Thursday.

The memo was shared between then-chief executive of British Trade International Sir David Wright to then-foreign secretary Robin Cook dated February 2000.

Mountbatten-Windsor, then known as Prince Andrew, was appointed the UK’s special representative for international trade and investment in 2001 before stepping down a decade later. In February, ministers agreed to release documents relating to his appointment to the role.
