George Russell was forced to retire from the Canadian Grand Prix due to a mechanical issue, allowing team-mate Kimi Antonelli to extend his lead at the top of the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship
A furious George Russell threw part of his broken down car across the track after crashing out of the Canadian Grand Prix.
The visibly-frustrated Brit also chucked his gloves on the floor after a mechanical glitch saw him bail out across the grass and come to a rest on track.
The DNF handed his Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli the chance to extend his championship lead.
The incident occurred on lap 30 of an exhilarating race that saw both Mercedes drivers exchange the lead multiple times in a nail-biting contest, reports the Express.
Russell started on pole but Antonelli took an early lead, only for the Brit to win it back within a few laps.
The pair then swapped places several more times over the course of the race, prompting their race engineers to intervene and warn them to race safely.
But before any more tense scenes could unfold, Russell’s race ended abruptly. He swore over the radio before throwing his headrest onto the track in disgust.
After he stood up, he then hit his car, and at the side of the track, he took off his gloves and threw them onto the floor, shaking his head repeatedly.
Fellow Brit, and reigning world champion, Lando Norris, also failed to finish after a disaster for McLaren, which saw both cars lapped by the leading Mercedes vehicles before the halfway point of the race.
Despite warnings from both Norris and teammate Oscar Piastri, McLaren gambled on the intermediate tyres to start off as light rain fell.
But they quickly realised they’d made a mistake and were forced to pit both drivers at the end of the second lap.
Piastri later went on to collide with the Williams of Alex Albon while Norris suffered a mechanical problem in what was dubbed a “disasterclass” for the papaya team.
