Staff at Arrowe Park Hospital in Merseyside claim they are ‘drowning’ due to resources allegedly being diverted to hantavirus cruise ship passengers isolating in a nearby accommodation block

The patients are being houses in apartments on the hospital’s grounds

Here is everything we know about the hospital treating hantavirus patients

  1. Staff at a UK hospital are alleging that priority is being given to passengers from a hantavirus-hit cruise ship who are quarantining on the hospital premises.
  2. Workers in the A&E department of Arrowe Park Hospital in Merseyside claim they are “drowning” as resources and focus are reportedly being redirected towards those isolating in the nearby accommodation block.
  3. Earlier this month, it was revealed that several Brits, who had been on board the MV Hondius vessel affected by a hantavirus outbreak, would be staying in the block on the grounds of the Wirral hospital to complete their isolation period.
  4. This is the same block that accommodated returnees from the Chinese city of Wuhan at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
  5. Frustrated and overworked staff within Arrowe Park’s A&E department told the Liverpool ECHO of their resentment over what they see as alleged prioritisation of this project, while conditions in A&E remain extremely challenging.
  6. However, the Wirral University Teaching Hospital Trust stated they did not “recognise” these claims and emphasised that staff welfare is a top priority.
  7. One staff source said: “We are still coming in every day to so many patients lining the corridor. Last week we had that many on the corridors that they were blocking all the doors and we had to hold people in the back of ambulances because we physically ran out of space.”
