A former Champions League and international footballer has passed away following a battle with MND, his heartbroken club have confirmed
A former Champions League and international footballer has tragically died after a battle with motor neurone disease (MND).
Paraskevas Antzas was a regular in the Champions League when he turned out for Greek giants Olympiacos. And during his time in Piraeus, Antzas clinched seven Super League titles and three Greek Cups as well as turning out for national team.
Olympiacos led the tributes after his tragic death: “Olympiacos FC, with a sense of sorrow, bids farewell to a great man and footballer, Paraskevas Antzas, who honoured the red and white jersey with passion, strength and dignity.

“His presence left a strong impression on the field of play and on everyone who knew him. We express our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones. Let the soil that will cover it be light.”
Antzas had started his career with Pandramaikos before moving to Xanthi. However, it was after his 1998 transfer to Olympiacos where he would experience the golden years of his career.
In 2003, he suddenly retired from football due to family reasons. However, he would soon make U-turn and signed for hometown club Doxa Drama.
He missed out on the Euro 2004 squad, despite playing in qualifying, when Greece shocked the world to win the Euros. And he would start his second stint with Olympiacos in 2007.
Antzas retired for good in 2009, announcing his decision with a statement on the Olympiacos website.
Tributes have poured in for the star on social media: “This one hurts. Perhaps one of the most underrated players in modern Greek football. An incredible centre-back. Rest in peace.”
“Sad news. RIP to Antzas Thoughts & prayers with his family,” a second said. And another added: “We’re living through unbelievable situations. I can’t believe it. From my idols at Olympiacos and so young. Truly, truly, truly such a shame.”
