Manchester United have been handed a major boost in their chase for Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali after Juventus failed to secure Champions League qualification. United are eager to land Tonali during the summer window, although they expect fierce competition for his signature.

Arsenal, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are amongst the other clubs that have been touted as potential destinations for the 26 year old Italy international. Juventus had also shown keen interest in Tonali, but a move to Turin now appears dead in the water following the Old Lady’s failure to clinch Champions League football.

Luciano Spalletti’s outfit went into their final match against Torino needing victory and helpful results elsewhere to guarantee their place in Europe’s elite competition next season. Yet Juventus couldn’t fulfil their own obligations, as they threw away a two-goal advantage to draw 2-2 with city rivals Torino on Sunday.

The outcome left Juventus in sixth place, behind fifth-placed Milan and Como for the fourth and final Champions League berth, meaning they will feature in the Europa League next campaign, reports the Express.

With that development, Juventus’ chances of tempting Tonali to the club have virtually disappeared. Reports surfaced last week indicating Juventus would require Champions League football to persuade him back to Italy. With Juventus now apparently out of contention, alongside former club AC Milan, United have been handed a significant boost in their efforts to secure a deal.

The Red Devils can offer Tonali Champions League football and, in all probability, a direct route into the starting eleven, with Michael Carrick’s team needing to fill the gap left by Casemiro.

United are pursuing at least two central midfielders this summer, as they address Casemiro’s exit and the pressures of an expanded fixture calendar next season.

Atalanta’s Ederson is amongst the players United are interested in, and they have reached a verbal agreement to sign the Brazilian on a five-year deal.

Ederson has been persistently linked with a move to United, and it seems a transfer could be completed this summer. Talks between United and Atalanta are advancing over a potential £43million move.

Nottingham Forest’s Elliott Anderson, West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes and Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni have also been connected with switches to Old Trafford as United look to strengthen their squad.
