The Frenchman, a three-time Ligue 1 winner with his hometown club, passed away after reportedly losing consciousness while travelling to a legends tournament on Friday (May 29).
Bergougnoux, a product of the Lyon academy, enjoyed a lengthy career across French and European football. He made over 100 appearances for both Toulouse and Tours, while also spending time with Italian side Lecce, Chateauroux and Cypriot club AC Omonia. Internationally, Bergougnoux represented France at under-21 level 20 times, scoring nine goals.
In 2023, he was diagnosed with parotid cancer, a rare type of head and neck cancer, but continued his coaching duties with Thonon Evian despite the illness.
He later joined Tours for the 2024/25 season before spending the past year with Le Havre, where he worked as assistant manager and helped the club avoid relegation.
