Michael Carrick is set to oversee a busy transfer window at Manchester United this summer, with Casemiro’s departure creating a midfield headache and Harry Maguire’s future in doubt
Michael Carrick is set to witness numerous arrivals and departures in his Manchester United squad this summer. The Red Devils manager is preparing for his maiden transfer window as permanent boss with the club getting ready for their Champions League comeback.
United are ready to secure Atalanta midfielder Ederson as their opening summer acquisition in a £38million agreement. Further signings are anticipated at Old Trafford with several departures potentially on the cards, including Marcus Rashford.
One player who has already departed Manchester is Casemiro after he concluded his four-year stint at the club before their final match of the campaign. The Brazilian’s void, both on the field and within the changing room, will undoubtedly be noticed and has been labelled a “headache” for Carrick to address. Strengthening United’s midfield options is a top priority for Carrick, particularly following Casemiro’s exit. The 34-year-old’s commanding influence and goal threat had a massive impact on United’s achievements this season with Edwin van de Sar highlighting just how much the club will miss him, reports the Mirror.
The former United legend acknowledged the task of replacing Casemiro will prove a “headache” for Carrick as he explained: “Some players will want to leave or extend their contracts.
“The big thing is Casemiro leaving, which will leave them a big gap in midfield. I think the last year and a half, the appreciation for him and his career has been immense, so that will be a headache.”
“Goal scoring-wise, with the addition of Mbeumo, Cunha, and Sesko, they have a little more grit, a little bit more stability, a little bit older players and in the past, they went for some young players.”
“I think they will do that again this summer, they will look at the Premier League to see which players are available to fill the gaps to make sure that the level of Man United goes up every year.”
It was fewer than two months ago when Harry Maguire penned a one-year deal with the Red Devils to silence rumours surrounding his future. The agreement, which includes an option for United to extend it by another year, was handed to the 33 year old following his brilliant displays that helped United climb the table under Michael Carrick.
Maguire appeared in all bar two of Carrick’s 17 matches in charge, with United securing third place and booking their return to the Champions League next season. But with the ink hardly dry on the deal, Maguire’s future still appears to hang in the balance. As per Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter Milan have been given the opportunity to snap up the England defender.
The report suggests that the defender could indeed be on his way out of Old Trafford, but isn’t currently high on the wish list for the Serie A champions. Maguire will enjoy a longer holiday this summer after being omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad.
