Michael Carrick is weighing up some big transfer business this summer at Manchester United

Manchester United are making a busy start to the summer as Michael Carrick seeks to leave his mark on the squad before going into his first full season at Old Trafford.

The legendary Red Devils midfielder was installed as permanent manager after steering United to a third-place finish and securing Champions League qualification, following the sacking of the hapless Ruben Amorim. His discussions with the club will have covered transfer backing, and the early indicators are highly encouraging, with midfielder Ederson poised to complete his switch from Atalanta and another signature secured.

Offloading surplus players will also prove essential, and headway has been achieved in that department, with Rasmus Hojlund converting his loan spell at Napoli into a permanent deal. Meanwhile, the destiny of another temporary departure, Marcus Rashford, stays uncertain as Barcelona hesitate over whether to acquire the England ace on a permanent basis. Here’s all the latest news from Old Trafford.

Onana in talks

Trabzonspor’s president says the club are in daily talks with Andre Onana about signing United’s calamity keeper permanently, reports the Mirror.

The Cameroon international, 30, lost his place to Altay Bayindir at the start of the season, before the £47m mega flop was sent out on loan to the Turkish Super Lig side.

Following a torrid few campaigns at Old Trafford, Onana has relished a successful season, helping Trabzonspor achieve a creditable third-place finish behind Galatasaray and Fenerbahce while claiming the Turkish Cup.

The club are now eager to make his move permanent, with president Ertugrul Dogan revealing: “We speak with Onana every day. We won’t have any financial difficulties.”

United, who shelled out an initial £43.8m plus bonuses to Inter Milan for Onana, will be forced to accept a huge loss if they wish to move him on this summer.

Dogan confirmed his side are ready to explore alternatives should an agreement prove elusive, stating: “We’ll make the necessary sacrifices. I don’t think we will experience any setbacks. But if we do, we will find another goalkeeper of the same quality.”

Keeper pens new deal

Third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton has put pen to paper on a fresh one-year contract.

The 40-year-old, who boasts three England caps, has managed just three first-team outings since his Old Trafford return for a second stint in 2021.

Heaton progressed through United’s academy system but has turned out for numerous other sides, including Burnley and Aston Villa, during his extensive career.

Heaton, who made his senior bow at Swindon while on loan from United in 2005, commented: “It is a huge honour to continue to represent Manchester United.

“You can feel the determination and ambition of everyone throughout the club to keep pushing for success. I am really excited to play my role in driving us forward and helping the group to compete for the biggest honours.”

Heaton has served as cover for Senne Lammens, who has been the preferred option since arriving at the club last summer, and Bayindir.
