The racing driver who had been accused of raping one of Michael Schumacher’s nurses has been cleared of the charges.

Joey Mawson – who was a close friend of Schumacher’s son, Mick – had been on trial over the alleged rape of an unconscious woman at the Schumacher family mansion in Switzerland back in 2019. She had claimed she was sexually assaulted twice after a cocktail party.

Mawson had always denied the allegations and insisted he had consensual sex with the nurse. And the former racing driver was acquitted on all charges in court today (Friday, June 5).

Speaking to German outlet BILD, Mawson’s lawyer said: “It’s a just verdict; he can finally make plans for the future now that his name has been cleared.”

The alleged rape had taken place over six years ago when Mawson was was playing pool in the billiard room at the end of the party with two other members of the Schumacher family’s staff. They were then joined by the nurse.

She had a few drinks before starting to fell unwell and had to be taken back to a nearby empty bedroom. The nurse was put to bed by other colleagues “without undressing her”.

Mawson was accused of entering the room and assaulting her twice while she was unconscious. He told the court he slept in her “until the early hours of the morning” so other staff wouldn’t find out about their “intimate moment”.

He also admitted he didn’t remember parts of the evening because of how much he had drunk, when questioned on the stand. He said: “It wasn’t until the next morning that I realised how drunk I had been.

“During the night, I had assumed that she was less drunk than I realised the next morning.”

The nurse could also not remember what had happened, but felt pain and was in discomfort when she woke up.

The court was told that the nurse had asked a fellow employee what had happened, and he told her that she had been carried up to her room and they had sent Mawson to check on her.

Court evidence also revealed Mawson had sent messages to the nurse: “I’m so sorry from the bottom of my heart.” When asked why he sent those messages, he replied: “It was the gentlemanly thing to do but I had done nothing wrong.”

The nurse pursued criminal charges in 2022 when she also informed the Schumacher family of the assault.

The Schumacher family were otherwise uninvolved in the case, and were not listed as witnesses at Nyon District Court.
