Research shows a typical supporter misses four goals every season by scrolling on devices – with Gen Zers, aged 14 to 29, the worst for this. It also revealed fans spend up to 29 minutes – nearly a third of a match – distracted by their phones.

Londoners were the worst offenders for scrolling, spending on average 36 minutes a game, while Liverpudlians concentrated the most on the football, using their phone for just 22 minutes.

Scottish fans spent 26 minutes scrolling per game, Welsh fans 35 minutes and Northern Ireland’s fans 40 minutes. Gen Z will miss the most of England’s big moments at 36 minutes per game or 108 minutes across the group stages – equivalent to an entire game.

Boomers will spend 20 minutes per game, Gen X, aged 46 to 61, 25 minutes and Millennials, aged 30 to 45, 33 minutes. A third check their phones regularly during “slow periods of play’’, a fifth during an injury or stoppage and a sixth during lengthy VAR decisions.
