A UK airport is shutting its doors for good this week following 90 years of operation.

The Coventry Airport site is due to close permanently on Thursday, June 11, before plans for transformation into a multi-billion pound green energy facility.

Flight operations ceased on May 9, with the official final day of service at the airport occurring later this week, according to the Civil Aviation Authority.

A CAA spokesperson confirmed Coventry Airport has “given formal notice to us of its plan to close the airport permanently with effect from 11 June 2026”.

The airport will make way for Greenpower Park, which will serve as a location for vehicle battery manufacturing and recycling.

The location sits within the West Midlands Investment Zone – a government scheme designed to boost the region’s manufacturing industry, reports the Mirror.

Forecasts suggest that over 30,000 positions will be generated and could draw in as much as £5.5 billion in private funding, according to the West Midlands Combined Authority.

The facility, initially founded in 1936 as Baginton Aerodrome, operated as RAF Baginton, a fighter base during the Second World War. Throughout the decades, it has handled cargo, light aircraft, and sporadic commercial services.

Coventry Airport also welcomed a Papal visit in 1982, when Pope John Paul II toured the UK and attracted an estimated 350,000 people to the location.

Numerous residents have shared their views on the closure, looking back on the airport’s extensive heritage and the possible impact on local enterprises and the broader community.

Hards Travel launched package holidays to Spain, France and Italy from the airport during the 1980s, with Thomsonfly commencing jet passenger services in 2004.
