Shakira stole the show at the World Cup opening ceremony on Thursday evening as she rocked a very bold outfit at the Estadio Azteca.
The Colombian singer-songstress headlined the opening ceremony as she performed her hit song ‘Dai Dai’ with Burna Boy. And she wowed fans with a bright yellow mesh top and matching shorts with her dancers.
Shakira has something of a love affair with the festival of football, meeting her ex-husband Gerard Pique when she recorded the official track for the 2010 edition. “I have this connection with [football] that seems unbreakable. That’s why I call my kids the Waka kids.

“I think they were born because of that song. That song took me to the World Cup, the World Cup had an important impact in my life, and they were born – the best thing that has happened to me.”
Turning to this year’s tournament anthem, Dai Dai, is an Italian slang phrase meaning “come on, come on,” is an emotional track, with the message deeply resonating with the artist.
Lyrics like “What broke you once made you strong” particularly struck a chord with her. “I always thought that I was more fragile or weaker than what life proved me to be,” Shakira said.
However, she wasn’t the only star to perform at the opening ceremony – and before the Colombian took to the microphone the crowd were treated to Fher Olvera and J Balvin – who is a superstar in Latin America.
However, the two giant labubus are what set social media ablaze. “Labubus at the opening gala of the World Cup, hating the 21st century with all their might…”
“Out of nowhere some LABUBUS appeared at the world cup opening ceremony,” a second shared. And another added: “Football is dead…”
Thursday’s opening ceremony is the first of three, with similar performances set to take place ahead of the first games in the USA and Canada.
