A Delta flight bound for the Detroit Metro Airport had to be diverted on Thursday after passengers reported a mysterious smell coming from the cockpit. The plane was forced to instead fly to Charlotte.

Flight 337 departed from Orlando with 187 passengers and six crew members onboard before the crew declared an emergency, according to an airline spokesperson.

Delta and the Charlotte Douglas International Airport confirmed that the plane landed safely in Charlotte. “Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people, and we apologise for their experience and delay in travel,” Delta said in a statement.

The spokesperson said the plane is being evaluated. Passengers were accommodated overnight with hotel and meal vouchers. The flight is scheduled to continue to Detroit on Friday.

The cause of the odour is unknown. Delta did not release any additional information at this time.

Back on terra firma, locals in the UK have been left holding their noses and frantically calling 911 in their hundreds after a revolting, “rotten egg” odour swept through two US towns.

More than 500 residents across the suburb of Frankfort, Illinois, contacted emergency services to report a foul smell. Fire crews were sent throughout the area to tackle the unfortunate pong, which locals described as a ‘strong gas smell’.

The odour has been traced to a possible chemical spillage in the village of University Park, though the stench was also detected in several neighbouring towns. On local Facebook pages, residents were swift to mention the reek, with one user confessing they wondered if the smell might be coming from them.

The user wrote: “Ok I thought I was going crazy, I smelled it as soon as I walked out of my house in Orland, had the neighbour come check, then went to [a nearby bar] and still smelled it, I thought the smell was following me lol”.
