Sir Keir Starmer won’t take any action against Mad Vlad Putin because the UK is “as good as defenceless” from Russian aggression, a security expert has warned.

The Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich yesterday fired warning shots at a British yacht sailing in the English Channel, just days after Royal Marine commandos and National Crime Agency officers seized sanctioned shadow fleet tanker Smyrtos.

The PM was branded “naive” for his assessment that the Russian vessel was drifting when asked about the incident at the G7 summit in Évian, France. And Professor Anthony Glees said we are “too weak” for risk a row with Putin.

He said: “Evian written backwards spells ‘naive’, and this is exactly what our PM was being. He blamed the Russians only for being ‘reckless’ in firing a volley of shots to elbow a British couple out of what Putin now regards as his space in the English Channel.

“It was in international waters, yes, but so were Alan and Jane Kelvey. They say Putin’s sailors did not make radio contact with them, there was absolutely no danger of a collision and there was also no fog.

“Exactly why the Grigorovich was ‘drifting’ is either unknown or not being released but it was likely stationary, scoping underwater cables linking the UK to France or taking a good look at Portsmouth. Three Russian lies on top of the ‘drifting’ claim.”

Prof Glees, of the University of Buckingham, said the shots were “clearly Russia retaliating against Sunday’s seizure”, adding: “What this sorry tale is about, I’m afraid, is the pathetic state of Britain’s armed forces right now.

“Why does the PM back up the MoD and saying there’s nothing untoward going on here?

“Is it the same reason the Met said there was ‘nothing to indicate a State Threat’ in connection with these carefully planned, intel-led attacks on our PM when a Russian link to El Money was clearly established?

“And is that reason we are currently just too weak to risk an argy with Putin? We’re as good as defenceless at this moment in time.

“Putin knows it, Starmer knows it. So Russian aggression, even if it’s tinpot aggression, is ignored. Saving faces rather than slapping them hard.”

Prof Glees said it wasn’t a case of the Russians are coming, but that they’re “already here”. He added: “Not just in a 409ft war frigate, 25 miles away from our prime naval base at Portsmouth, but committing acts of sabotage on the mainland.

“They’ve been doing this for at least 20 years. They murdered Litvinenko in 2006 under the noses of MI5 and try to kill Skripal in Salisbury, a key UK defence site bristling with soldiers and defence establishments, in 2018.”
