Liverpool are set to sign Spain star Victor Munoz after swooping to snatch him from under the noses of Newcastle United.

The Liverpool Echo understands the Premier League giants are close to wrapping up Munoz’s arrival after agreeing to trigger the pacy and explosive winger’s transfer release clause. It has been reported the Spain international has a €40million (£34.6million) clause within his Osasuna contract.

Munoz is now anticipated to pen a six-year deal and finalise his move to Merseyside, to become the first signing of the new Andoni Iraola era at Anfield and play for his countryman. It will be a bitter blow for Newcastle, who once again have missed out on a transfer target and seen a player choose Liverpool instead.

There had been speculation that Newcastle were poised to capture the 22-year-old. However, they have failed to conclude negotiations and the Reds have now pounced.

Munoz is presently with the Spain squad for this summer’s World Cup in North America and remained on the bench during their scoreless stalemate with Cape Verde in their tournament opener on Monday.

It is anticipated he will complete his Liverpool medical while in the USA.

The ex-Barcelona academy graduate operates primarily as a left winger but can also feature on the right flank when needed, as demonstrated during his stint at Osasuna.

Munoz has earned two caps for Spain and will be eager to add to that tally during the competition, with their next fixture scheduled for Sunday in Atlanta against Saudi Arabia before meeting Uruguay later this month.

Should Munoz, who only joined Osasuna last summer from Real Madrid, make the switch to Liverpool, he would be the first signing of Andoni Iraola’s tenure as head coach.

Iraola was brought on board by the Reds earlier this month following the exit of Arne Slot, and will oversee pre-season training next month, which includes a jaunt to the United States.
