Michael Carrick is considering how to revamp his Manchester United squad

Manchester United’s bosses will be monitoring their players at the World Cup while also focusing on the summer transfer market.

Twelve stars are flying the flag for the Red Devils across the United States, Canada and Mexico, with several targets also featuring in the tournament. Michael Carrick will soon welcome back his non-World Cup contingent as he aims to launch a successful first full season as permanent manager.

Former United legend Wayne Rooney has expressed his views on one star who isn’t away in North America. Meanwhile, another ex-United player has secured a permanent move to a different club, having last featured for the club in January 2022. Here’s all the latest news from Old Trafford.

Mason Greenwood ‘agrees transfer’

Mason Greenwood is reportedly poised to join Roma on a permanent deal worth around £35m plus bonuses.

The former United forward has been lethal for Marseille since moving to the Serie A club, netting 48 goals and providing 17 assists across 81 outings, reports the Mirror.

Nevertheless, the 24-year-old is now eager to move elsewhere after the French outfit missed out on European qualification last term.

Italian publication Corriere dello Sport has suggested Greenwood’s salary has already been settled by Roma, who have pinpointed the right-winger as a priority signing this summer.

It is understood the former United player will pocket £3.9million per year from the Italian outfit plus bonuses, with this figure set to rise the longer he remains.

Carrick will benefit if this deal gets the green light, as the club negotiated a 40% sell-on clause as part of his move in 2024. If he moves for around £35m, this could equate to around £14m to £15m for United.

Greenwood last played for United in January 2022, when he started in a 1-0 win at Old Trafford against West Ham. Just days later, however, he was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape, assault and coercive control.

Greenwood, who always denied any wrongdoing, was cleared when the Crown Prosecution Service announced the case against him would be discontinued in February 2023, after key witnesses withdrew their involvement.

He joined Spanish side Getafe on loan in 2023 and Marseille the following summer.

Wayne Rooney slams ‘strange’ decision

Wayne Rooney is baffled Luke Shaw hasn’t been handed an England call-up following Tino Livramento’s withdrawal through injury.

The Newcastle defender was compelled to pull out of the World Cup squad with a calf problem, with Trevoh Chalobah set to take his place.

The Chelsea centre-back will feature at his maiden World Cup as a consequence of this development, with Rooney labelling this choice “strange.”

Shaw featured in every Premier League fixture for United last season and played his part in the team’s Champions League qualification.

The experienced defender boasts 34 caps for England and has turned out for his nation at four major tournaments previously – two World Cups and two European Championships.

Thomas Tuchel’s choice to summon Chalobah caught Rooney off guard, as he anticipated Shaw would be the German’s first port of call. Speaking on his BBC Sport podcast, the former England striker said: “It’s a bit strange. I would have liked to have seen Luke Shaw.

“And then Djed Spence maybe being cover for Reece James, and Luke Shaw come in. I’m sure Thomas Tuchel has kept contact with players to stay available, and I’m sure he [Chalobah] was one of those who were available.”
