Star Sports has been stung for the fourth day running at Royal Ascot after a massive £275,000 bet on Aidan O’Brien’s Precise landed in the Coronation Stakes on Friday
A Royal Ascot bookmaker has been hammered for the fourth consecutive day at the prestigious racing festival – and they could be facing more upset on the final day off festivities.
Star Sports operate from pitches in the Ascot betting ring and has built a reputation for accepting sizeable wagers from big-money punters. The meeting kicked off costly for the firm, with them ending £400,000 in the red on day one. This came after accepting £180,000 worth of bets on Bow Echo, who sent backers into raptures when claiming Tuesday’s St James’s Palace Stakes.
Wednesday saw the bookmaker suffer heavy losses on Ombudsman, victor of the Prince of Wales’ Stakes, following several large wagers, including two worth £20,000 each.
Thursday brought no relief as Scandinavia stormed to Gold Cup glory after attracting one massive £120,000 winning bet at odds of 5-2, as reports the Mirror.
Friday offered no sanctuary when the week’s biggest wager was placed on Precise, a stablemate of Scandinavia, who triumphed in the Coronation Stakes.
After £275,000 was staked on Precise at odds of 8-11, Flynn Goward, Managing Director at Star Sports, said he had “everything crossed that we can get Ryan Moore’s mount beaten here, but judging by the trend of the week so far we aren’t too hopeful.”
His fears proved justified as the Classic-winning filly saw off Touleen and the 1,000 Guineas winner True Love to claim the Group 1 mile contest. Goward responded: “The writing was on the wall for us when Ryan Moore hit the front aboard Precise in the Coronation, and we had to watch the final stages through our fingers as another massive bet – £275,000 at 8-11 – landed to floor us in the ring.
“We’re certainly seeing stars at the moment, and after another dreadful result, we could be staring down the barrel at a six-figure loss on every day of Royal Ascot this year if this continues.”
