A posh restaurant at Wimbledon was forced to serve up a bargain to customers after a printing error listed fancy wine at rock bottom prices. The Centenary Brasserie, which overlooks court 11 at the famous Tennis venue, listed two white wines at less than half price.

Bumbling bosses honoured the mistaken price as customers flocked to get their hands on large glasses of Piquepoul/Terret Blanc from France, which had been listed at £6.95, instead of its correct price of £15.95.

The same pricing error also affected a 250ml glass of Thirsty Birds Chardonnay, from England, and diners were able to get it at the printed price.

One customer said there had been confusion after spotting the discrepancy on their bill. They told the Daily Mail: “They tried to charge us £15.95 for the wine. I told them it was listed at £6.95.

“They removed it off the bill after taking ages. Then the waitress said it had been an issue all day with the menu, which also didn’t even have the starters listed.”

A member of staff told the paper: “The prices should be around £14 for a big glass but it takes too much time to explain to people [why there is a different price]. We think we’re getting new menus tomorrow.”

The Centenary is of the All England Club’s most popular restaurants and offers a brasserie downstairs and a premium restaurant upstairs serving small plates and boasting views to the outside courts.

Michelle Dite, head of Operations at Wimbledon defended the error, telling the Mail: “Every day there’s a couple of little things, marginal gains overnight to fix bits and pieces for the next day.

“We have lot of menus around the place, and we pride ourselves on detail, but you know we’ve got hundreds of chefs, hundreds of restaurants, we’ve got multiple outlets, so there’s always some little things that [are missed]. But I’m sure it’ll be fixed for today.”

The price mix-up discount provided a rare bit of good value for punters faced with eye-watering food and drink prices at the Championships.

A glass of Pimm’s is a whopping £13.45 – up £1.20 on last year – while the iconic strawberries and cream have risen to £2.85. Buying the two together now costs £16.30. Meanwhile a pint of draught Stella Artois will boozers back £8.95.
