UK charity store big closing 87 charity outlets by 2027 – see full record

The British Heart Foundation has announced it will close 150 of its charity shops across the UK, with 87 set to shut by the end of March 2027. The BHF said it is facing an “exceptionally challenging trading environment”

The British Heart Foundation is gearing up to shut 150 of its outlets, with 87 closing by the end of March 2027. The charity retailer will implement the closures over the coming two years, amid escalating operational expenses and shifting consumer behaviours.

Several of its premises are no longer economically sustainable, and there are also planned reductions to the central teams that oversee its retail operations.

The second wave of premises, set to close by March 2028, will be revealed once all impacted staff have been informed of the proposals.

Chief Executive Dr Charmaine Griffiths said: “Our shops mean so much to our colleagues, brilliant volunteers and communities across the UK.

“They are places where people come together to donate, shop and volunteer, helping to make a real difference to lives affected by cardiovascular disease”.

“We know this will be a difficult time for our dedicated colleagues and volunteers in affected stores and emphasise our deep appreciation and gratitude for all they have done for BHF and the communities they serve.”, reports the Express.

“Like most retailers, we are facing an exceptionally challenging trading environment. Cardiovascular disease remains one of the UK’s biggest killers and our priority is funding research to save lives.

“We must take the difficult step to close some of our shops to sustain retail’s important contribution to funding BHF’s groundbreaking research.”
