An investigation has been launched by the police following the discovery of a man’s body in the water at a popular country park.

Emergency services were summoned to Watermead Country Park in Leicestershire on Saturday afternoon (July 4) after receiving reports of a body sighted in the water. Leicestershire Police officers, together with paramedics from East Midlands Ambulance Service, responded to the call, which came in around 2.28pm.

The man’s body was retrieved from the water shortly afterwards. Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, he was declared dead at the scene. Police have confirmed that they are currently treating the death as unexplained while investigations continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, reports Leicestershire Live.

Watermead Country Park is a favourite spot for walkers, cyclists, anglers and families, drawing thousands of visitors annually with its lakes, nature trails and wildlife.

The park, located on the outskirts of Leicester, is renowned for its network of lakes formed from former gravel pits.

Officers remained on site following the grim discovery as investigations commenced. At this point, the police have not disclosed any details about the man’s identity or age.

A representative for Leicestershire Police stated: “Police received a call at 2.28pm today (Saturday 4 July) regarding a report of a body in the water at Watermead Country Park.

“Officers attended at the location and the body of a man was removed a short time after. Colleagues from East Midlands Ambulance also attended and the man was later pronounced deceased at the scene. The death is being treated as unexplained as enquiries continue.”

The police have not released any additional information.

Meanwhile, a body has been retrieved from a river in Devon during the search for a missing teenager. Taylor Charlton was last sighted on the evening of May 8, sparking a widespread search operation.

On Thursday, police announced that his family had been notified following the discovery of suspected human remains. Authorities were alerted to the River Taw near Sticklepath, Barnstaple, at 4.20pm on Wednesday after suspected human remains were spotted in the water.

Emergency services arrived on the scene and located the remains, which were subsequently removed from the water. A representative for Devon and Cornwall Police stated: “Formal identification is yet to take place, but the family of 15-year-old Taylor Charlton have been informed of this development.

“They are being supported by specialist officers and we ask that their privacy is respected at this time.

“We understand that this update will impact the local community, and we ask the public to avoid speculating and await updates from police in due course.

“There will continue to be a presence around the river today as emergency services make further inquiries.”
