Henderson injured himself in the celebrations

England star Jordan Henderson will miss the rest of the World Cup after suffering a freak injury while celebrating Sunday’s stunning victory over Mexico.

The Brentford midfielder, 36, needs surgery on his wrist after he landed awkwardly after slipping over the advertising hoardings at the Azteca. He will play no further part in the Stateside World Cup, it is reported.

Henderson, an unused sub against Mexico, left the field on a stretcher and was seen receiving oxygen. He was taken to hospital in Mexico City and did not travel back to England’s training base in Kansas City with the rest of Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

The horror injury is a sour footnote on an otherwise glorious night for England, whose heroics were enough to become only the third team to beat Mexico in 90 competitive matches at their fortress home ground.

Captain Harry Kane had lost his voice and could barely speak in his post-match interview after belting out Wonderwall with the travelling army of England supporters in the stadium after the full-time whistle.

But after celebrating with jubilant supporters, Henderson was seen trying to jump back over the advertising boards back to the pitch.

The veteran midfielder was left in considerable pain after he tripped over the advertising hoardings and landed awkwardly, with his right arm trapped beneath his body.

The ex-Liverpool ace was stretchered off and given oxygen before being rushed to hospital. Thomas Tuchel said afterwards: “I’m sad because Jordan injured his wrist.

“It’s quite serious. He’s in hospital. It doesn’t fit with the rest of the evening. I don’t know the procedure.”

Two quick-fire goals from Jude Bellingham and a Harry Kane penalty were enough to seal victory for the Three Lions after an inspired rearguard display at the iconic footballing cathedral.

Bellingham’s double had given England a 2-0 lead, but Quiñones quickly pulled one back for the hosts. Despite Jarrell Quansah being sent off on 54 minutes, Kane’s spot kick on the hour mark restored their two goal lead.

Raúl Jiménez netted a penalty of his own just nine minutes later, but ten-man England held on for victory on a night of drama which saw the game delayed by over an hour due to severe storms in the Mexican capital.
