Preston Davey’s depraved killer may have abused the tiny tot “after he found out his boyfriend had cheated on him”, a former colleague has claimed. The 13-month-old was suffocated to death by Jamie Varley, 37, who was sentenced to a whole life term in prison.

His partner John McGowan-Fazakerley was handed a 25-year jail term for his part in the baby’s horrific abuse. A women who worked with Varley, believes McGowan-Fazakerley may not have been faithful and Varley reacted badly when he allegedly found out.

“He’d found out that John had cheated on him and I think he took it out on the baby,” the source told the Sun. “I think it was an ongoing affair and Jamie found some messages on his phone.

“I assume it happened in Manchester because that was where John worked. Jamie found out about it and it caused a lot of problems.

“I think Jamie took his hatred and anger at John’s cheating out on Preston.”

The baby was found with 40 internal and external injuries after he was rushed to hospital. Former teacher Varley claimed he drowned in the bath before he was sentenced to a whole life order in prison.

It comes as Varley is reportedly trying to save his skin in prison – by changing his name. The sick ex-teacher is believed to be hiding behind a new identity.

He is said to have assumed the made-up name Harry Robb just days after being banged up in HMP Wakefield, dubbed Monster Mansion due to some of the notorious inmates it houses.

Reports suggest Varley has formally applied to change his name by deed poll in a process that costs £53.05. And he has even added the middle name Jae, it is claimed.

A prison source said: “He has changed his name to Harry Jae Robb in the hope of giving himself anonymity. He’s absolutely petrified.”

The insider told the Daily Mail: “There have already been threats against him and he thinks that by changing his name, people are less likely to recognise him and know who he is.

“He knows he has a huge target on his back and he thinks his new name will make him safer and will help him escape vigilante attacks.”
