A British grandmother “full of life and joy” died in tragic circumstances after undergoing a boob job and tummy tuck in Turkey, an inquest has heard. Caroline Baker, 47, travelled to the popular medical tourism hotspot of Antalya with her daughter for the four-hour dual procedure last year.

But the routine trip turned into a nightmare when the grandmother-of-one began to “gasp for air” post-surgery and suffered a fatal cardiac arrest. Senior Coroner Christopher Wilkinson told Winchester Coroners’ Court that the beloved gran may have died from “natural causes exacerbated by the effects of surgery”.

The family, from Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, had flown out to the sunny Turkish resort in July 2025.

Caroline, who was described as a lively and joyful woman, was no stranger to medical travel, having previously had a successful gastric sleeve procedure in the country.

In a heartbreaking statement read out by her father, Caroline’s daughter Kayden recalled the terrifying moments leading up to her mother’s death.

“Myself and my mother arrived at the hospital in Turkey in the early hours of the morning, the night before her surgery. We stayed overnight for her surgery the next day.

“When the doctors arrived in the morning, they did all the necessary tests, and she was all set for the surgery. We said our goodbyes, and she was taken away to surgery.

“The surgery was scheduled for around four hours. The hours continued passing by, and nurses arrived to take her recovery bed into the other room. This was when I began to panic.”

Desperate for answers, Kayden went hunting for doctors to find out what had happened to her mum.

Medical staff initially assured her that the double procedure had been “successful”. However, they revealed that her mum suddenly “become ill and she began gasping for air when her heart stopped”.

Kayden’s statement added: “They said they did everything they could for 47 minutes, but they were unable to get her heart beating again.”

Caroline was pronounced dead at around 7pm local time on July 16. Turkish authorities originally recorded the medical cause of death as a “heart attack”.

However, a UK post-mortem conducted by pathologist Dr Adnan Al-Badri in Hampshire found no evidence of heart scarring or consistent signs of a heart attack.

The examination confirmed the breast augmentation and abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) were successfully performed with no signs of infection or sepsis.

Instead, Dr Al-Badri noted signs of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and fatty deposits in her lungs.

A toxicology report also noted elevated levels of her prescribed antidepressants alongside standard anaesthesia drugs, though toxicologist Peter Streete said it was not sufficient to say it contributed to her passing.

The inquest also heard from Caroline’s grieving husband, Graham, who explained that his wife “had suffered from depression following the death of our daughter”.

Recording an open conclusion due to a lack of detailed information from the Turkish authorities, Coroner Wilkinson addressed the grieving family.

He said: “We know, based on the evidence from the hospital, her daughter and from the postmortem report, that the surgery itself, in which there were two surgeries undertaken, doesn’t seem to have played a contributory part in her death.

“However, what I can say is that it is more than likely that COPD or lung infection has caused extra pressure on her heart.

“But there is not enough evidence before me to further explain the medical cause of death or the extent the surgery contributed to it.

“The only conclusion I can return is an open conclusion that it is possible that she died from natural causes exacerbated by the effects of surgery.

“In the absence of further information from Turkey, I have given the evidence that we have and I hope that it may help to provide comfort to the family. Once again I extend my condolences to the family.”

In a final, moving tribute to his wife, heartbroken Graham said: “My wife was a much-loved mother, wife and grandmother. She was full of life and joy. No words can seek to comprehend the pain we go through every single day.”
