Mackenzie Shirilla, 21, is serving two concurrent sentences of 15 years to life for the 2022 murder of her then-boyfriend Dominic Russo and his friend Davion Flanagan
‘Netflix killer’ Mackenzie Shirilla – dubbed “hell on wheels” by a judge after a horror double death crash – has sparked outrage after posing for a prison selfie that has gone viral.
The 21-year-old, whose case has been thrust back into the spotlight by the hit Netflix documentary The Crash, is serving 15 years to life in the Ohio Reformatory for Women for the murders of then boyfriend Dominic Russo, 20, and his friend Davion Flanagan, 19.
The pair died in the early hours of July 31, 2022, when Shirilla drove a Toyota Camry down a dead-end road in a Strongsville, Ohio business park and slammed into a brick wall
Shirilla was convicted after it was determined she had crashed at speeds of 100mph on purpose.
Now Shirilla’s Instagram – run from the outside by family and a support team – has sparked anger after posting a highly stylised, pouty selfie taken behind bars. With glossy overlined lips and an eyebrow slit, critics demanded to know if she had gained access to cosmetic fillers in prison.
However reports say the “lip filler” look was created with dark lip liner, a lighter shade in the centre and high-shine gloss. Inmates can buy consmetics through commissary, with claims her supporters also bankroll higher-end kits traded inside, AOL reported.
The snap was posted alongside a petition for a retrial after the Ohio Supreme Court rejected her latest appeal when lawyers missed a 365-day deadline by one day – blaming a leap-year mix-up.
Conduct files have also linked Shirilla to rule-breaking claims, including allegedly flashing during a video visit and having banned items in her cell. She won’t see a parole board until September 2037, when she’ll be 33.
Black box data and security footage previously showed Shirilla accelerated hard, reaching around 100mph, and drove straight into a wall in 2022.
Prosecutors said she never braked, never tried to swerve and kept her foot “pinned” to the accelerator right up to impact, killing her boyfriend and pal.
Shirilla survived but suffered multiple serious fractures. At her August 2023 trial, the court heard evidence of a toxic relationship in the weeks before the crash, including recordings of Shirilla threatening and degrading Russo during arguments.
Prosecutors argued she deliberately used the car as a weapon to end the relationship – treating Flanagan in the back seat as “cargo”.
Judge Nancy Margaret Russo convicted her of murder and said Shirilla had transformed from a normal teenager into “literal hell on wheels”, carrying out a controlled mission to kill. Shirilla insists she “blacked out” and can’t remember the crash.
