A large cloud of dust was seen near beachgoers after part of the cliff came down between Penarth beach and Cardiff Bay Barrage. A council spokesperson urged the public to follow warning signs
Stunned beachgoers looked on in horror as a section of cliff crumbled where people had been soaking up the sun.
The drama unfolded at approximately 4.30pm on Friday, July 10, between Penarth beach and Cardiff Bay Barrage. A striking photograph circulated online reveals a massive dust cloud billowing near holidaymakers who had been relaxing at the beloved location.
Vale of Glamorgan council released an alert “strongly” urging members of the public to keep clear while council crews evaluate the scale of the landslide. David Wilton, who was present at Penarth beach during the incident, described it as “truly amazing” that no one sustained injuries, reports Wales Online.
He said: “Lots of us were down that side of Penarth beach as it was a very hot Friday after work and it was high tide.
“There were lots of teens a bit further down towards where slide was who looked to be away from all the adults.
“We then heard a rumble and then saw a small slide – we all knew what it was. There was a big cloud of dust.
“Our concern was whether anyone was injured. It’s truly amazing that people were not as there were sunbathers either side of the landslide.
“People just stood and stared as it rare to actually see one, especially at a busy time.”
A council spokesperson revealed the stretch of coastline has an extensive history of instability and urged the public to continue following warning signs, barriers, and safety notices.
She stated: “We are aware of a landslip on the coastal section between Penarth Pier and the Cardiff Bay Barrage. This stretch of coastline has a well-documented history of cliff instability, landslides, and rockfalls, particularly following prolonged weather events and coastal erosion.
“Council teams are assessing the extent of the landslip and will take any necessary action to ensure public safety. The public is strongly advised to stay away from the affected area and, as a precaution, keep clear of all cliff faces and the areas directly beneath them as landslides and rockfalls can occur without warning.
“Residents and visitors should continue to follow all warning signs, barriers, and safety notices when enjoying our coastal paths and beaches.
“We are continuing to monitor the situation and will share further updates as they become available.”
