Liverpool are beginning a new era under Andoni Iraola, with the Reds looking for summer transfer window signings to bolster the Spanish manager’s squad
The Andoni Iraola era has begun and Liverpool are desperately in need of new transfers to bolster a squad that finished a disappointing fifth in the Premier League last season.
The Merseyside giants are preparing to embark on a pre-season tour of the United States, where they’re scheduled to take on Sunderland, Wrexham and Leeds. So far, the signings of Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz represent the only fresh faces at Anfield this summer.
Yet with the World Cup racing towards its climax, transfer activity could well gather pace. Today’s developments see Paris Saint-Germain set out their demands for one of their sought-after talents and a huge move involving a longstanding Reds target. Here’s all the latest news from Anfield.
Transfer target ‘set for medical’
Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes has long been on Liverpool’s radar.
Bitter rivals Manchester United have also weighed up a move for the Brazilian ace, after his club were relegated to the Championship following a dismal Premier League campaign where he was one of few rays of hope.
But now the 25-year-old former Flamengo man is on the brink of a move cross the Midlands to Aston Villa, having agreed to sign for Unai Emery’s Europa League winners.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano posted on X: “João Gomes to Aston Villa, here we go! Verbal agreement in place at €40m fee plus €5m add-ons.
“Wolves accept £38m package and authorise medical for João Gomes to #AVFC. Gomes left training to travel and complete move, as @johntownley11 reported.”
PSG stance on Bradley Barcola
PSG are reportedly being “realistic” about the current situation surrounding Liverpool target Bradley Barcola.
The Athletic have claimed the reigning European champions would prefer to retain the French winger.
Yet they are understood to recognise that Barcola has two years left on his deal and isn’t a guaranteed starter, indicating the player might be receptive to a departure.
Barcola is believed to feature prominently on Liverpool’s summer shortlist, having been pinpointed as one of four backup options to Yan Diomande, who appears destined for PSG.
Arsenal have also been mentioned in connection with the French talent, though they are thought to be prioritising a raid for Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers.
Barcola turned out for France during their World Cup semi-final elimination against Spain on Tuesday evening. With the player’s tournament now concluded, his future could be settled imminently.
Earlier reports suggested PSG were seeking a fee in the region of £130million for the 23-year-old forward.
