Litzy Lara Banuelos was once at the absolute pinnacle of her profession. Known across the globe by her stage name, Emily Willis, she graced magazine covers and reached the apex of the adult entertainment industry when she was named Female Performer of the Year at the 2021 AVN Awards.
Celebrated for her striking beauty, charm and fierce determination, the young performer seemed to have the world at her feet. Yet behind the glamour and accolades, a quiet struggle was unfolding. Like so many who navigate the intense pressures of high-profile entertainment, Banuelos found herself facing a steep personal battle with drug dependency.
In early 2024, determined to reclaim her health, career and future, she made the brave decision to check into treatment. She walked through the doors seeking recovery. Instead, what followed was a catastrophic medical nightmare that left her profoundly incapacitated, permanently changing the course of her life forever.
Desperate search for recovery ends in disaster
On January 27, 2024, Banuelos checked into Summit Malibu, a luxury rehabilitation facility in California, seeking to overcome an addiction to ketamine. Her family maintains that she entered the facility clean and was fully committed to turning her life around.
Just eight days later, on February 4, that hope vanished. A nurse practitioner discovered Banuelos unconscious in her room. It remains unclear precisely how long she had been in that state before being found. Emergency services were summoned, and CPR was performed immediately. When paramedics arrived on the scene, they performed intense resuscitation efforts for up to 40 minutes before finally restoring a heartbeat.
While her heart began beating again, the physical toll was catastrophic. Deprived of oxygen for a prolonged period, Banuelos suffered a severe, irreversible anoxic brain injury.
Now 27 years old, the former star requires total, round-the-clock physical care. She remains unable to walk, move independently, or speak, relying entirely on medical intervention and the constant care of her loved ones.
$3million settlement and legal battle
The fallout from the tragic event culminated in a legal battle brought by Banuelos and her mother, Yesenia Lara Cooper, against Summit Malibu. The lawsuit alleged negligence, abandonment and recklessness, claiming the facility failed to provide appropriate care and left Banuelos with permanent physical and cognitive damage.
Summit Malibu strongly denied all wrongdoing. In court filings, the facility argued that Banuelos was regularly monitored, but had repeatedly refused medical advice, declined prescribed medications and rejected recommendations to seek treatment at an urgent care centre or hospital – action the facility maintained its staff had no legal authority to force upon her.
Ultimately, Santa Monica Superior Court Judge Susan Bryant-Deason approved a $3million settlement on Banuelos’ behalf. Judicial approval was legally required because Banuelos is no longer capable of managing her own affairs or understanding legal proceedings.
Banuelos’ attorney, James A. Morris Jr. – who reduced his team’s fee request from $1.2million to $1million to finalise the agreement – said the case was far from straightforward.
“Having lived and breathed this case for nearly two years, I can state with confidence that Ms. Banuelos is significantly injured, but that this case was no slam dunk,” Morris wrote in a court declaration, noting that no one can definitively say what triggered the initial crisis given her fragile condition upon entering treatment.
Fear of locked-in syndrome
Today, Banuelos resides in Utah under the constant care of her mother, Yesenia. Her day-to-day existence is delicate, with frequent hospital visits required whenever her fragile condition fluctuates.
Physically, the toll has been devastating. Having weighed just 100lbs (7st) when she entered rehabilitation, Banuelos has lost even more weight since. Court filings note that she only occasionally opens her eyes or makes faint grunts, rarely responding to external stimuli in a consistent way.
Yet beneath the physical immobility lies a heartbreaking possibility. Medical professionals and her legal team have raised concerns that Banuelos may be suffering from “locked-in syndrome” – a rare and tragic condition in which a person remains mentally conscious and aware, but is physically paralysed and unable to speak or move, apart from limited eye movements.
“She does make outward noises from time to time, she does move her body around some, but her eyes do move, she does track,” Morris previously explained. “Whether or not she’s understanding exactly what’s going on is hard for us to determine.”
Family clinging to hope
Despite the bleak medical prognosis, those closest to Banuelos refuse to give up. Her mother continues to care for her day and night, searching for small signs of connection.
“If you were asking her mother, her mother would say ‘yes, I can communicate with her and understand her albeit not in a verbal sense,'” Morris shared.
The staggering financial demands of round-the-clock care have been helped by a GoFundMe campaign, which has raised over $100,000 from fans and supporters worldwide. As Banuelos rests at home, her mother sits by her bedside, reading aloud the outpouring of messages, emails, and well-wishes that arrive daily.
