Manchester United beat Rosenborg 5-0 in a dominant pre-season victory as Michael Carrick had plenty to be happy about with his side’s performance
Manchester United claimed a convincing 5-0 victory over Rosenborg in Trondheim on Friday night.
United endured a 1-0 loss to Wrexham in their summer opener last weekend, but the Reds produced a vastly superior display, albeit against a depleted Rosenborg outfit midway through their league season.
Here, the Daily Star Sport rates how the United’s players fared at the Lerkendal Stadion as goals from Shea Lacey, Joshua Zirkzee, Jacob Devaney, Harry Amass and Ethan Williams put a smile on Michael Carrick’s face.
Radek Vitek – Made his maiden start of pre-season following his half-time introduction against Wrexham. The shot-stopper was largely untroubled. 7.
Leny Yoro – Adapted well to operating at right-back throughout pre-season. He delivered several quality passes and seems to be grasping the proper positioning for the role. Struck the crossbar with a header. 7.
Harry Maguire – Has consistently proven his worth when building from the rear, and he executed an excellent line-breaking pass to initiate an attack. He donned the captain’s armband once more and was communicative with his younger colleagues on either flank. 8.
Ayden Heaven – Is forming a solid partnership with Maguire and handled several aerial challenges from Rosenborg. 6.
Luke Shaw – Little action occurred down his wing while he remained on the field, though he might have contributed more in attack. 6.
Andrey Santos – Fashioned an excellent opportunity in the opening period by threading a smart pass to Dorgu in a pocket of space within the area. It highlighted his awareness, proving he offers more than simply winning possession and distributing. 7.
Mason Mount – Appeared to have gained from last weekend’s clash against Wrexham, which cleared away the rust. He looked sharp, delivering precise passes in midfield, and showed great energy with his movement. 7.
Joshua Zirkzee – The Dutch forward began centrally but frequently drifted into deeper areas where he thrives most. Combined brilliantly with his colleagues and provided the assist for Lacey’s opener before netting a superb strike himself. 8.
Shea Lacey – Earned his opportunity to start following his substitute appearance last weekend and seized it with both hands. Harried opponents relentlessly and set United on course for a commanding victory with a brilliant opening strike. 8.
Bryan Mbeumo – Glided past two defenders inside the opening 10 minutes, though he might have done better with an opportunity moments later. Produced several untypical loose touches, which will surely be polished as pre-season progresses. 5.
Patrick Dorgu – Despite being freed down the flank by Lacey in the 14th minute, he couldn’t beat the first Rosenborg defender with his delivery. The post denied him from opening the scoring. 6.
