‘My time-saving robotic lawnmower pays for itself and retains my grass wanting lush’

With no wires, app, or emptying needed, this clever robot has taken my most hated summer chore off my hands and saved me hours of time

When summer rolls around with scorching weather, there’s nothing worse than having to cut your grass instead of chilling in the sunshine with an ice-cold drink. And if you love the look of your lawn but fancy never having to mow it again, I’ve found a solution that has been put to the test in my own garden over the last two years.

I splurged on the LawnMaster OcuMow Robot Lawnmower from Amazon back in July 2024, after moving into a place with grass for the first time and quickly getting fed up of having to go out and cut it at least once a week. At £299, this isn’t an impulse buy – but for me, this little robot has been worth its weight in gold.

Now on its third summer of keeping my lawn in check, my robot lawnmower has saved me countless hours that I would have had to spend cutting the grass myself. Now I have a baby, this spare time is all the more precious, and I can use it to get other gardening jobs or house jobs done.

But how exactly does the LawnMaster OcuMow Robot Lawnmower work? It’s simple: it uses a grass recognition camera and ultrasonic sensors to cut the grass, with no outdoor power socket, boundary wire, or app required.

All I need to do is choose my desired cutting height, which can be adjusted between 200mm and 600m, and press the start button. It comes with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, allowing it to mow for up to four hours at a time.

Another top feature is that this robot lawnmower mulches the grass as it mows, avoiding the need to stop and empty it. As long as I haven’t let the grass grow too long, I don’t even need to rake up the clippings afterwards, as they’re so small that they’re barely noticeable – and they help to keep the grass looking lush too.

When I was weighing up whether to buy this robot lawnmower, I did debate opting for a more budget-friendly traditional model that I could operate myself – such as Argos’ cheapest electric option, the McGregor 34cm Electric Corded Rotary Lawnmower for £70, or the Black & Decker Corded Hover Lawnmower for £55.99 at Currys. But aside from the time-consuming aspect, another thing that put me off was the lack of storage space I have at home.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a garage or shed where I would have room to put a larger standard lawnmower. But this isn’t a problem with my robot – its compact size means it fits in the bottom of a cupboard no problem, and it’s easy to take out into the garden when I need it with its top carry handle.

For all its perks, I have to point out that the robot lawnmower isn’t without its flaws. Firstly, it’s worth noting that the way it works means it might not be suited to all gardens, such as those with larger lawns or ones where the borders are less defined.

While the raised borders in my garden ensure that the robot sticks to the grass, it does mean that it tends to avoid the very edge of the lawn, leaving about an inch of uncut grass which I need to then tidy up with a strimmer. This is because its sensors are designed to detect and avoid obstacles – but this can also result in it refusing to go over very long grass, so I have to make sure to keep on top of putting it out.

That being said, these hiccups still take far less time to sort compared to having to go out and mow the lawn myself – and for anyone who wants to get their time back this summer, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this robot lawnmower. Despite its price tag, it has definitely paid for itself and then some in the hours it has saved me.
