Gatwick Airport has confirmed that it currently has no running water due to an issue with supply, with passengers being handed out bottled water as the problem is investigated
Gatwick Airport has been left with no running water with travellers saying they can’t use toilets or buy drinks. Bars and restaurants at the airport are also reportedly closed.
SES Water has said that customers in Surrey, West Sussex, and Kent are experiencing water shortages this morning, which has been sparked by a water supply issue at its Bough Beech centre. “Due to a number of complications caused by a power outage at our Bough Beech Water Treatment Works,” SES Water said.
One tourist wrote on X:“Gatwick Airport has lost access to running water after days of disruption. We’re talking about the UK’s second busiest airport here… Our country is crumbling.”
The airport has confirmed the problem and said it is affecting water supply in both terminals. It is currently under investigation. Bottled water is being given to passengers. The airport said in a statement on X: “A water issue in the Horley area is causing disruption at the airport this morning.
“The problem is affecting water supply in both terminals and is currently under investigation. Bottled water is being made available to passengers and staff across the airport and other contingency measures are being put in place to ensure the welfare of our passengers. We will provide further updates and apologise for any inconvenience to passengers.”
Travellers are reporting no water fountains, no flushing toilets and no hand washing. SES Water, which serves the area, said in a statement on X: “We have an issue at our Bough Beech Water Treatment Works with some customers experiencing either low water pressure or loss of supply. We apologise to everyone affected. We’re working hard to return water supplies to normal.”
Another update from the company said: “We are now delivering bottled water to the most vulnerable customers on our Priority Services Register who need it most.
“Our teams are working hard to return water supplies to normal and we apologise to everyone affected. We’ll continue to keep you updated.”
SES Water said the postcodes being affected are TN8, TN11 and parts of RH1. People online say RH6 is also being affected as it covers both Gatwick terminals.
A spokesperson for SES Water said: “Due to a number of complications caused by power outage at our Bough Beech Water Treatment Works, some customers are experiencing low water pressure or a temporary loss of supply.
“We are working to overcome those complications and return the treatment works to supply as quickly as we can. Gatwick Airport is being affected but we are working with them while our teams work to restore normal service as quickly as possible.
“We thank customers and our partners at Gatwick Airport for their patience.”
