A mother-of-two gym owner has tragically died after the balcony she was standing on gave way during a birthday celebration.

Lorenna Moraes was enjoying festivities with family and friends when part of the property’s balcony collapsed on Saturday (July 18) evening. The 35-year-old fell approximately four metres, sustaining serious injuries and suffering cardiac arrest twice.

Paramedics attended to her at the scene in Uruçuca, Brazil, before she was transported to a specialist hospital in nearby Ilhéus. Despite medics’ attempts to save her, she passed away later that evening. Lorenna ran the CT Evolução Academia gym in Ilhéus and was a familiar face within the local fitness scene.

In the days leading up to the tragedy, she had been expressing her enthusiasm on social media about launching a new branch of her business, which was nearing completion.

The reason behind the balcony’s collapse will be examined by officials.

Images from the location appear to indicate the balcony railing failed. Some local reports suggested Lorenna hit her head on the kerb following the fall.

In a post from May, she wrote: “Holding my children’s hands, hearing their laughter and creating memories that will last a lifetime… is priceless.”

Earlier in the month, she penned: “Being a mother has completely transformed me. It has taught me about strength, devotion and boundless love.

“And having a mother reminds me every day where my care, my courage and my way of loving come from.

“I am grateful for the arms that once held me… and for the arms that I can now open to my children.”

Meanwhile, a 13-year-old girl has tragically died under mysterious circumstances while attending a summer camp at a military academy.

Dafne Zapata Quintos Martínez arrived at the Marina Doenitz Military Academy in Ciudad Madero, Mexico, on July 13. Just four days later, her mother, Alejandra Quintos, received a chilling call from the academy informing her that Dafne had passed away.

She told local press: “I handed her over alive and healthy. She came here for a summer course, a military-style camp. All they tell me is that she suddenly collapsed in the bathroom out of nowhere, and then 10 minutes later they call me to say she has no vital signs.”

The academy had a policy prohibiting direct phone contact between children and their families, as reported by NeedToKnow.

During the four-day camp, which Dafne’s family paid 25,000 MXN (£1,071) for, only staff provided general updates about the children’s well-being.

According to Alejandra, staff member Estrella Mora called her on Tuesday (July 14) to report that Dafne had vomited and fainted face-first during a physical activity, splitting her lip. Read the full story here.
