A huge rescue mission was launched at Fistral Beach in Newquay, Cornwall this morning – a man and woman have sadly been pronounced dead at the scene
Two people have tragically lost their lives following an incident at Fistral Beach in Newquay this morning (Monday, July 27). Emergency services, encompassing the police, coastguard and ambulance, were spotted at the beach late last night.
Coastguards verified that they received a call at 9.30pm and that emergency teams are still present at the scene. A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: ” Police were called by the South Western Ambulance Service at around 9.45pm on Sunday 26 July following reports that two people had been recovered from the water at Fistral Beach, Newquay.
“Emergency services attended and a cordon was put in place, which has since been removed.Sadly, a man and a woman were pronounced deceased at the scene.
“Their families have been informed, and our thoughts are with them at this extremely difficult time.A file will be prepared for HM Coroner.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing as many as nine emergency vehicles at the beach, while a rescue helicopter hovered overhead for a considerable period, reports Cornwall Live.
