Eddie Howe is set to leave Newcastle United after a disappointing season for the Magpies with a surprise replacement already lined-up at St James’ Park.
Howe will leave the club in the coming days after five years in charge after telling the club he wants to take a break from football. According to The Athletic, the departure is amicable and the Magpies are already in talks with a potential replacement.
Newcastle have opened talks with Matthias Jaissle of Al Ahli, who has also has success in the Champions League with Red Bull Salzburg, but remains largely unknown to a UK audience. Jaissle, 38, has twice won the AFC Champions League with Al Ahli, who are also owned by Saudi’s PIF.
The German, who spent his entire playing career with Hoffenheim, is known for his brand of high-intensity, attacking football.
Howe was first appointed back in 2021, shortly after Newcastle were taken over by their Saudi backers. He initially led them to Premier League safety, before a push towards European football that culminated in the Champions League.
He will best be remembered by Newcastle fans as the man who led them to silverware for the first time in 70 years with the 2025 Carabao Cup.
However, Newcastle struggled last season, finishing 12th in the Premier League, and being dumped out of the Champions League in the last 16 with an 8-3 aggregate defeat to Barcelona.
His latest defeat on Wednesday evening as Bristol City humiliated the Premier League side 4-1. Howe’s side were dismantled by the Championship outfit after an early doubled from Sam Greenwood and Lorent Tolaj.
