Michael Carrick has suffered a transfer blow

Manchester United still have three pre-season fixtures left before the new Premier League season kicks off. And Michael Carrick will be eager to see some new faces arrive at Old Trafford.

Following his success in steering United to a top-four finish, Carrick was appointed permanent manager in May. United are understood to be amongst the sides pursuing Bologna defender Jhon Lucumi, as they seek to strengthen their backline.

Meanwhile, the club’s hopes of landing Bayern Munich star Kim Min-jae have taken a knock. Here, Daily Star Sport looks at some of the major developments concerning United.

Bayern Munich centre-back Kim Min-jae has declared that he will remain and battle for his position at the German outfit. United have been connected with a possible swoop for the 29-year-old, but the South Korea international is determined to stay with Vincent Kompany’s squad.

“As a player, just to be with a team like Bayern Munich is a blessing,” Kim said. “Last season, I thought I played a lot of matches. I am competing as the third defender [behind Upamecano and Tah], and I know I have no choice but to work hard,” reports the Manchester Evening News.

When questioned about Kim’s role at the club, Bayern boss Kompany emphasised the benefit of having players competing for the same position: “What I will give a compliment to Min-jae [about] is that no matter what, he keeps the focus, and he does the talking on the pitch.”

United are said to be amongst several clubs battling for Bologna centre-back Jhon Lucumi, who is pursuing a prominent move this summer. The 28-year-old was included in Colombia’s World Cup squad and is believed to have attracted interest from Juventus.

Quotidiano Sportivo suggests the Old Lady have seen a £15m offer rejected by Bologna, who value Lucumi at £24m. United are also understood to have expressed their interest, though they encounter fierce rivalry from Chelsea, Como, Napoli and Nottingham Forest.

Regarding the player’s position, Lucumi allegedly “wants the big clubs”, which could boost United’s chances of securing the transfer battle. The defender has spent four campaigns with Bologna and appeared 43 times across all competitions last term.
