Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed he has married Georgina Rodriguez. It comes after a bride and groom were mobbed by thousands of fans who mistook them for Ronaldo and Rodriguez on the Portuguese island of Madeira on Saturday.

Ronaldo proposed to Rodriguez in August last year. The proposal came almost 10 years after they first met in 2016 at a Gucci store in Madrid, where she was working as a sales assistant.

Talk soared when Georgina, mum to three of Ronaldo’s six children, posted a picture to her 76.5million Instagram followers of the two holding hands on his luxury private jet, showing off their glistening rings and watches.

And the marriage has now been confirmed with Ronaldo posting a snap on his official Instagram. The picture shows both of them holding hands with their wedding rings on.

The marriage comes just days after a huge crowd gathered outside Funchal Cathedral as speculation reached fever pitch that Ronaldo was about to tie the knot. The ceremony turned out to be for Portuguese couple Fabio Ramos and Fatima Nicole Cunha Teixeira who hail from Madeira but live in France, reports the Sun.

Ronaldo previously said that he and Georgina planned to marry after the World Cup, which Portugal exited at the hands of eventual winners Spain following a late Mikel Merino goal.

Speaking to Piers Morgan in an interview, he said: “I hope to arrive at my wedding with the champion’s trophy,” before saying that Georgina was the only woman he had dated that he had wanted to settle down with.

He added: “I’m going to marry her because I believe it’s the right time. Not just because she’s the mother of my children — but because she’s the person I love most.”
