Michael Carrick is revamping his Manchester United squad this summer and has a new £30m target in his sights.
The Red Devils are preparing for a four-pronged assault on the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup this season after returning to Europe’s top table under Carrick, after the club legend replaced the hapless Ruben Amorim and guided his old club to a remarkable third placed finish.
The former United and England midfielder has been eyeing new signings including defensive recruits, with Newcastle’s Lewis Hall on his radar, yet it appears he has other options in that department if it proves too difficult to prise the Magipies star out of St James’ Park. It is not yet clear whether United will pull off a swoop for Newcastle ace Lewis Hall and the Red Devils are exploring alternative options.
Hall, 21, has been touted as the successor to fellow England international Luke Shaw, but Newcastle are standing resolute in their not-for-sale position, despite the exit of manager Eddie Howe and a flurry of sales by the Magpies.
That’s prompted United to submit enquiries elsewhere, with Club Brugge’s Joaquin Seys the newest name added to the wishlist, reports the Mirror.
The Red Devils are said to have already approached his club concerning his availability, while Arsenal and Aston Villa have also made contact.
Seys, 21, has caught the eye in the Pro League and earned a surprise call-up to Belgium’s World Cup 2026 squad. He appeared in the quarter-final defeat to eventual champions Spain.
Following Patrick Dorgu’s repositioning into a more advanced wide role, Diogo Dalot remains the only other natural left-back option available to Carrick.
Shaw, 31, is now entering the final year of his deal at Old Trafford and it remains uncertain whether the club will offer him fresh terms.
The Sun has reported Club Brugge will seek £30million for Seys, though that isn’t anticipated to represent a significant obstacle.
£35m signing ‘a bargain’
Premier League winner John Obi Mikel has praised United for their acquisition of Belgium’s Youri Tielemans.
The former Chelsea midfielder says he remains baffled by how his old adversaries managed to secure the playmaker from Aston Villa for £35m. Just 24 hours after completing Andrey Santos’s signing from Chelsea in a £48m deal, it was confirmed an agreement had been reached for Tielemans.
United triggered the player’s release clause and it was understood Tielemans impressed officials with his eagerness to finalise the switch.
Now, Champions League winner and four-time FA Cup victor Mikel has listed the transfer among the finest of the summer. And he found it difficult to comprehend why Villa would consent to including such a reasonable clause in their star’s deal.
“For me, it’s Youri Tielemans,” said Mikel on The Obi One Podcast when asked to judge the best midfield signings already made this summer. “Honestly, how did Manchester United get him for £35m? That’s a steal. I watched him before and during the World Cup and you can see that this is a player.
“Obviously, we all know how Tielemans plays, he can play as a six, an eight or a 10 and when you have a player that can play anywhere, it gives you the variety to change the way you want to play. Tielemans is that guy. He scores goals, he’s dangerous from set pieces, he’s brilliant on the ball and he rarely gives it away.
“The only thing people can say is that he’s not the quickest, but he reads the game so well. He is very intelligent with and without the ball. When I look at all the midfielders that have transferred to different clubs [this window], the best one is Tielemans.”
