Voting has just closed in the Clacton by-election – a vote triggered by Nigel Farage’s own resignation from the Commons.
The Reform chief was facing a Commons probe into the failure to declare a £5million gift he received from Thai-based crypto billionaire, Christopher Harborne, ahead of the 2024 general election.
But he quit as an MP in June in an attempt to stage a “people versus the establishment” showdown his own backyard of Clacton.
The problem? The political stunt backfired spectacularly as Reform’s major political rivals – including Labour – boycotted the contest and left Mr Farage facing a string of comedy candidates, including Count Binface.
But it’s going to be a long evening – the result in the contest is not expected until between 5am and 6am, but could be later. We’ll bring you all the latest updates, including from my colleague, Dave Burke, The Mirror’s political correspondent who is at the count in Clacton.
