A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted child abduction following a report that a child was approached by someone in a UK town.
Cumbria Police said they are investigating an incident which is alleged to have happened on Rawlinson Street in Barrow on Wednesday evening. The man is currently in police custody having come forward following reports circulating online.
Officers have requested that members of the public allow them to carry out their work and establish the factual circumstances of what has occurred, and to refrain from unhelpful online speculation particularly now there is an individual in custody.
Cumbria Police said in a statement: “A man has been arrested this morning (13 Aug) as part of an investigation following a report of a child having been approached by a man in Rawlinson Street in Barrow yesterday evening (12 Aug).
“The man is currently in police custody having come forward following reports circulating online. The man is under arrest for attempted child abduction at this time.
“Cumbria Police would like to reiterate their request for people to allow officers the time to carry out their work and establish the factual circumstances of what has occurred and to refrain from unhelpful online speculation – particularly now there is an individual in custody.”
It comes as six individuals have been arrested in connection with the disappearance of two girls from Rugby.
The missing girls, aged 11 and 12, were discovered in Cornwall on Tuesday (August 11) after vanishing from Rugby on Saturday night. Warwickshire Police force has confirmed that early this morning (August 12), detectives apprehended two men, aged 62 and 25, and one woman, aged 56, from Tintagel, Cornwall, on suspicion of abduction.
A 42-year-old man from Falmouth was also taken into custody on suspicion of abduction. Later this morning, two women, aged 75 and 47, from Rugby were arrested on suspicion of abduction.
All six are currently being held in custody where they are set to be questioned today. The force has stated that all six individuals are known to the two girls.
In a statement, Chief Superintendent Jon Belcher said: “After extensive investigations, our colleagues at Devon and Cornwall Police who were acting on our behalf found the girls safe and well yesterday.
“We have been investigating how these girls came to be in Cornwall, and we have progressed our enquiries today with these six arrests. The people who are currently in custody are all known to the girls so there was and is no wider threat to the community.
“Over the coming days, officers will be out and about in the community and in areas of interest, speaking to the community and conducting house-to-house enquiries. If you have any concerns, please talk with them.”
