Heathrow Airport has issued a ‘do not drive’ warning to passengers travelling to Terminals 2 and 3, as flooding in the central terminal area has resulted in road closures causing major travel disruption
Access to Terminals 2 and 3 at London Heathrow is restricted due to flooding, the airport has warned. Water that has flooded the central terminal area is preventing drivers from reaching either terminal by road, as well as departing from them, the airport said.
Passengers have been urged not to drive to those terminals and to travel by either rail or London Underground instead.
The airport said early on Saturday (August 15) : “Flooding in the central terminal area has resulted in on-going road closures restricting access to Terminals 2 and 3. Passengers travelling to or from either of these terminals today must not travel by road.
“Passengers are strongly advised to use Heathrow Express, Elizabeth Line and Piccadilly Line rail services where possible.
“Any passengers that must travel by car must use Park and Ride, head to Terminals 4 or 5 and take free rail services from there, or change at local rail stations. Please allow extra time for your journeys.
“Our teams are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible, we apologise for any disruption caused.”,
The chaos has struck travellers during the school summer holidays, which sees hundreds of thousands of customers pass through the airport at peak times.
Heathrow previously said July 19 had been its busiest day of the year so far, as many schools broke up for summer, with 267,000 passengers passing through.
The flooding follows major disruption to railway services heading to the airport earlier this week, caused by a water leak that led to the closure of a tunnel, reports the Express.
Elizabeth line services between Hayes & Harlington and Heathrow Terminals 4 and 5 were halted on August 10, while Heathrow Express trains were cut by half, with just two trains an hour departing from London Paddington.
