‘Not only is it nice looking, its performance is amazing’
If ironing is one of those household jobs that always seems to take longer than it should, a powerful steam iron could make all the difference. One Russell Hobbs model has impressed shoppers with its ability to tackle creases quickly, with one saying it ‘glides through your clothes in no time’.
The Russell Hobbs Steam Iron has been reduced to less than half its original price, £34 down from £69.99. Powered by 3,100 watts, the ceramic soleplate is designed to heat up 15% faster and provide 50% smoother ironing compared to the Powersteam Pro Iron 19330.
It also delivers a hefty 210g burst of steam to tackle stubborn creases in thicker fabrics such as denim and linen. For everyday ironing, the iron delivers 70g of continuous steam, while its 350ml water tank means there’s less need to stop to refill it.

The soft handle and temperature dial are designed to make longer ironing sessions more comfortable. There’s also a self-clean function to help prevent limescale build-up, alongside an anti-drip function designed to prevent water marks appearing on clothes.
Vertical steaming means it can also be used on hanging garments. For added peace of mind, the iron has an automatic shut-off function, switching off after 30 seconds when left lying flat or around eight minutes when left upright.

A tapered tip with button grooves is designed to make it easier to reach awkward areas around collars and buttons. Another option is the HOMCOM Steam Generator Iron for £56.99 from Yimbly, an online marketplace owned by this site’s parent company, Reach Plc. This one is self-cleaning and has a 1.5-litre tank which offers ‘uninterrupted use’, freeing shoppers from constant refills, the site says.
There is also the Turbosteam 2800W Steam Iron for £59.99 from Morphy Richards. It features a 170g per minute steam boost for ‘stubborn creases and thicker fabrics’, and it is said to glide effortlessly over clothing. The Russell Hobbs Steam Iron has been rated highly on Amazon, however.
One person said: “This iron is amazing. Not only is it nice looking, but its performance is also amazing. The slender, sleek curves that make the iron up its performance. It’s well-made and great value for money. The non-stick base just glides through your items. Steam is powerful. It may be a little on the heavy side, but that’s needed to give your clothes a great quality of ironing. The base heats really quickly – be careful not to touch. This iron saves you from standing for ages to get your clothes ironed. Because of the weight and great quality of the base, it glides through your clothes in no time. I read the reviews before I purchased this iron, and it has very positive feedback. I would like to add to it as I’m very impressed and I’m glad I selected to buy this iron. I strongly recommend it.”
Another added as part of a longer review: “A nicely constructed and effective product. It works well on shirts, even expensive ones that you might find less forgiving of too much heat and not enough steam.”
This person wrote: “Bought this iron as my old steam iron packed up. A quick-heating iron that glides through clothes easily. The non-stick base makes it easier to iron nylon and cotton materials. Good value for money. I saw a similar item, like for like, in one of the big high street stores with double the price.”
Some had slight hesitations, however. For example, this person said: “This iron does the job but is very heavy, so be warned. The cord length is very good.” Another added: “A little bit heavy but serves very well.”
