Baby killer Lucy Letby was reportedly left completely devastated in her cell after learning a doctor described as her “boyfriend” had suddenly died. The 36-year-old is understood to have stayed holed up alone for hours after a prison officer broke the news to her behind bars.
It emerged the medic, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was found collapsed in his car on June 24 this year. In a chilling twist, that exact date in 2016 was when the killer nurse targeted her final tragic victim.
The married 53-year-old was rushed to hospital but died on July 3 – the eighth anniversary of Letby’s initial arrest. Staff at HMP Bronzefield in Surrey are said to have stepped in after reading reports of the death.
A source told The Sun: “Lucy took the news of the death calmly, but was clearly devastated by it. She really went into her shell and was in her cell alone for hours afterwards.
“They knew it’d be a trigger for her so were duty-bound to tell her and offer her any support they could. But she took it really hard and the coincidence of the anniversaries made it all the more difficult.”
Letby is currently serving a whole-life sentence for murdering seven newborn babies and trying to kill seven others at the Countess of Chester Hospital.
Insiders claim the twisted serial killer still believed the pair had a future together.
A second source added: “She was infatuated with him and thought the world of him.
“She was slightly delusional, but hoped they’d one day be together. But he was a married father of two and did end up giving evidence against Lucy.”
The killer nurse denied being “in love” with the consultant during her trial, despite sending him intimate messages calling him “sweetie” and breaking down in tears when he stepped into the witness box.
At the Thirlwall Inquiry in 2024, the doctor said he had been tricked into giving her information about babies she had attacked.
