Arsenal turned on the style during the Premier League’s opening night as they bested Coventry 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium thanks to Mikel Arteta’s inspired decision
Arsenal turned the opening night of the Premier League into a Community Shield-style exhibition – as Coventry were handed a chastening return to the top flight.
It was only ever one-way traffic during the Premier League curtain raiser as the Gunners, less than a week after handing Manchester City a hiding, were at their box-office best in a 3-0 win.
Mikel Arteta’s side put on a show, without ever having to shift into top gear, as Coventry were left chasing shadows while being utterly outclassed by the champions. Frank Lampard’s side now know life in the Premier League is a stark contrast to the Championship.

Kai Havertz was at the centre of the action for the Gunners – and it was the German that fired Arteta’s side ahead in the 15th minute.
There had been doubts how far Arsenal could go with Havertz as their No.9, but with Victor Gyokeres left on the bench it’s clear who Arteta is looking to as his main man this season.
And it was an inspired decision, Havertz and Odegaard looked reborn at the Emirates while Bukayo Saka, now fully fit, provided runs in behind to complete the creative pair.
Christos Tzolis, who was on the other wing, continued his highly impressive start to life in north London. The Greek winger is already looking like he could be putting his name forward for one of the signings of the season after two impressive performances.
Saka notched Arsenal’s second, finishing off a sweeping move that had the Coventry defence in sixes and sevens. While Odegaard added a third shortly after the interval.
It wasn’t just a win on the opening day for Arteta – it was the laying down of the Premier League gauntlet for all those who dare to challenge him this season.
The Gunners look to be the only team that hasn’t undergone some sort of change or have a question mark hanging above their heads this summer.
Arsenal have a unique chance, in the coming weeks, to pile on the pressure on their title rivals with an electric start to the new season.
Arteta and Co have a trip to Aston Villa next before they welcome Chelsea. But, for now, they can kick their feet up over the weekend as its the turn of their rivals.
