HMRC has filed a petition allegedly seeking to have Jamie Carragher declared bankrupt over an unpaid tax bill.
The former Liverpool and England full-back, 48, had a case filled against by solicitors representing HMRC at the High Court in London yesterday (August 26), according to City AM. A spokesperson told the outlet that HMRC does not comment on individual cases.
But they added: “We take a supportive approach to dealing with customers who have tax debts and do everything we can to help those who engage with us to get out of debt, such as offering instalment plans. We only petition for bankruptcy as a last resort.”

Carragher, who made a name for himself at Liverpool, is now a regular on Sky Sports, co-hosting its Monday Night Football programme. He also works for CBS on their Champions League coverage.
The Liverpool icon was on TV screens on Monday evening, discussing the Premier League action over the opening weekend and providing punditry duties for Chelsea’s trip to Craven Cottage to clash with Fulham.
He also makes regular appearances on the Stick To Football podcast and YouTube show, which is part of Gary Neville’s The Overlap media business.
Carragher made more than 500 senior appearances for Liverpool between 1996 and 2013 – he also earned 38 caps for England during his career.
During his time at Anfield he won the FA Cup twice, the League Cup three times and the Champions League once. He was also part of Liverpool squads for victories in the UEFA Cup, Super Cup and Community Shield.
He hung up his boots in 2013 before moving into punditry – where he remains a regular fixture.
