A major incident has been declared after a train reportedly hit a vehicle in the Burscough area of West Lancashire. Several emergency services, including ambulances and a fire engine, are currently at the scene
Pictures and eyewitness accounts indicate that an incident has taken place on a railway line in the Burscough area of West Lancashire. Photos depict a Northern train halted abruptly beside green fields.
Multiple ambulances and a fire engine are also present at the scene, along with several individuals in high-visibility uniforms.
The same photos seem to reveal parts of a damaged vehicle near where the train has come to a stop.
At this time, there is no confirmation regarding any potential injuries or casualties, reports the Liverpool Echo.
On X (formerly known as Twitter), Northern stated: “Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident Wigan Wallgate – Southport all lines are blocked.
“Please note that other train operators may also be affected by disruption – please check your whole journey before travelling.”
“Northern train ticket restrictions have been lifted in the affected areas, including Advance and Peak restrictions, during this disruption. Restrictions will be reinstated once the disruption ends.”
The incident appears to have occurred near Martin Lane in Burscough, close to its junction with Whitehouse Lane.
Northern Trains has enacted emergency protocols to handle the severe network disruption, the Manchester Evening News reported.
Consequently, all lines between Wigan Wallgate and Southport are completely blocked, disrupting travel routes connecting Greater Manchester and Merseyside.
Additionally, ticket restrictions have been lifted for all affected areas. Passengers holding Advance, Peak, or Off-Peak tickets can use them on alternative routes or later services.
Travelers are also being strongly urged to verify their entire journey through National Rail Enquiries before setting off, as other regional operators are facing knock-on delays.
Some of the passengers on the train who have been involved in this incident have taken to social media to comment on the situation they have been caught up in today, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Commenting on the Ormskirk Live facebook page, one person said: “I am still on the train with my kids, we are all shook.”
She also shared a picture of damage from inside the train, where a door has been pulled off the hinges and debris can be seen all over the train floor.
Another passanger on the train added: “Everyone on the train is okay we are all just stuck waiting to be evacuated.”
