Liverpool have completed a £30m signing on Transfer Deadline Day – with just hours before the window slams shut.

The Reds have signed 18-year-old shot-stopper Lucca Brughmans. The Belgian emerged as a surprise target for the Premier League giants after Nottingham Forest enquired about the availability of Giorgi Mamardashvili.

However, the Belgian will stay put at Genk, where he made his professional debut, for the next 12 months before he makes the jump to Anfield. Brughmans was courted by a host of club across European football, including Real Madrid, but has signed for the Reds on a six-year deal.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool’s Global Talent department, headed up by Matt Newberry, identified Brughmans as a target before plans to recruit were stepped up in recent days.

Brughmans has been on the club’s radar for some time having caught the eye with his performances for Belgium at 2025 UEFA Under-17s Championship in Albania.

Posting on their social media page Genk shared an emotional message, which was reposted by Brughmans on his Instagram: “From Genk to Liverpool. Congratulations on your next step, Lucca. We’re proud of you.”

“This is a very special moment for me,” he said. “Liverpool is one of the biggest clubs in the world. As a young goalkeeper, you dream of getting such an opportunity someday.

“At the same time, I am enormously grateful to KRC Genk. This club helped shape me, gave me opportunities, and made me better every day.

“I will stay in Genk this season with full focus and want to give everything for the club.”
