A man has been brought before the Old Bailey charged with shooting his 19-year-old girlfriend in the face and then absconding to Spain.

Jamie Duncan, 21, is accused of murdering Israa Djeddou in her family home’s bedroom in Barnet, north London, in the early hours of June 8. On Tuesday, he attended court via video-link from Wormwood Scrubs, facing charges of murder and three firearms offences.

Prosecutor Kelly Brocklehurst stated that police were summoned shortly after midnight on June 8 and despite the efforts of medical personnel Ms Djeddou was pronounced dead at the scene at 12.45am. An autopsy confirmed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the face.

Mr Brocklehurst revealed that the defendant and victim had known each other for approximately three months and had been in a relationship for about one month.

Members of the victim’s family reportedly heard shouting and a scream around midnight just before the shooting, followed by the defendant leaving the property, according to Mr Brocklehurst.

He said the defendant allegedly left the country. The firearm allegedly used in the shooting was not recovered, the court heard.

Duncan was found in Spain and extradited back to the UK, where he was arrested on August 26.

Judge Nigel Lickley KC scheduled a plea hearing for November 16 and a provisional three-week trial starting on June 7 next year.
