Flight have been cancelled at a UK airport today with travellers warned of major disruption as a result.
Norwich Airport will be shutting down during three separate intervals due to Air Traffic Control staff illness and ongoing industrial action on Thursday. The airport is now closed until 2pm and will shut its doors again from 4pm until 4.45pm and 6.45pm until 7.45pm.
In an update to passengers, the airport stated: “Due to Air Traffic Control staff sickness and ongoing industrial action which limits the flexibility to provide additional staff cover, Norwich Airport will be closed to air traffic on Thursday 3 September during the following periods: 0600 to 1400, 1600 to 1645 and 1845 to 1945.”
KLM has scrapped three services, including KL1054 from Norwich to Amsterdam, KL1055 from Amsterdam to Norwich and KL1056 from Norwich to Amsterdam. The airport attributed the cancellations to “operational reasons”.
Norwich Airport said KLM would get in touch with affected passengers regarding rebooking. Airlines have been notified about the periods when the airport will be out of action, while passengers have been encouraged to check the status of their flight before setting off.
The airport added: “Passengers should check with their airline for the latest information about their flight before travelling to the airport. We apologise to passengers for the inconvenience this may cause.”
This disruption comes in the midst of an ongoing dispute involving Air Traffic Control staff at Norwich Airport.
Members of the Prospect union working in Air Traffic Control have voted for industrial action short of a strike from August 17, amid a row over pay and conditions.
Norwich Airport has stated that discussions are ongoing in an attempt to resolve the dispute, and has urged passengers to keep checking with their airline for the most up-to-date information.
