A three-month-old baby girl tragically lost her life while camping with her family in a forest, police have said. Emergency services rushed to Strawberry Lane, Great Wyrley, in Staffordshire, at 8.45am on Saturday after receiving reports of a child suffering from cardiac arrest.
The infant, whose identity has not been disclosed, was sadly pronounced dead by paramedics shortly after their arrival. Detectives probing the “unexplained” death have stated that their investigation is still in its early stages, but they believe it to be an “isolated incident”.
Det Insp Katie Gregory said: “While the investigation remains at an early stage, this is an isolated incident and we understand that the child’s family was camping in the area. The death is being treated as unexplained at this time”.
Yesterday, police cordoned off a fishing lake within the Wyrley and Essington Branch Canal Local Nature Reserve. Drone footage captured at the scene reveals at least four tents and camping chairs arranged next to each other, near to fishing platforms.
Robert Duncan, district councillor for Cheslyn Hay, expressed his condolences, saying: “I know how deeply upsetting news like this is for our community. It’s important that we allow the emergency services the space they need to complete their work with dignity and care.
“As soon as the full and confirmed details are formally shared with me, I will provide a further update to residents. Until then, please avoid speculation and allow the family and responders the privacy and respect they deserve.”
