Wrestling legend ‘Superstar’ Bill Dundee has died aged 82 following a battle with dementia, as heart-wrenching tributes pour in from across the ring world
Wrestling icon “Superstar” Bill Dundee has died at the age of 82 following a tragic health struggle. The ring titan’s son, Jamie Dundee, broke the devastating news to fans after his father passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning.
While an official cause of death is yet to be confirmed, the sad news comes after Jamie previously revealed his father was bravely living with late-stage dementia.
Tributes have poured in from across the sports entertainment world for the Scottish-born star, who went on to become one of the most influential figures in wrestling history. Confirming his father’s passing, Jamie shared an emotional message with fans on social media.
He wrote: “With a heavy heart it hurts me to have to say this. At 3:30 this morning the SUPERSTAR BILL DUNDEE has passed away. I love you Dad, I’ll catch you on the OTHERSIDE: REST IN PEACE SUPERSTAR.”
The heartbreak follows a difficult few years for the family. Speaking on Story Time with Dutch Mantell, Jamie previously gave fans an update on his dad’s condition.
He said: “[Bill] don’t know it, but he’s alright. I mean, he’s got that dementia…he just smiles all the time like that.”
Jamie added: “With stage three, they say once you get there, you either cry all the time or you smile all the time and that’s what he does, so I’m glad he don’t just sit around crying all the time.”
Just a day before his death, Memphis Wrestling paid tribute to the icon during its September 5 broadcast, with roster members gathering to celebrate the beloved star one final time.
Dundee first began his journey in the squared circle during the 1960s after moving from Scotland to Australia, before making the jump to North America where he cemented his status as a titan of the sport.
He became a massive box-office attraction, most notably through his historic, decades-long battles and legendary tag team partnership with Jerry “The King” Lawler.
Alongside his iconic in-ring work with Jim Crockett Promotions and WCW, Dundee was widely celebrated as one of the sharpest creative minds in the business behind the scenes. Fellow ring stars and fans rushed to pay tribute to the legend following the news.
Former WCW star Marc Mero posted on X: “Saddened to hear about the passing of ‘Superstar’ Bill Dundee. I was fortunate to share a lot of great memories with Bill during my years in WCW.
“More importantly, he was instrumental in helping me during those early years when I was still learning the wrestling business and trying to find my way.
“Bill had an incredible mind for professional wrestling and a career that earned him the respect of so many people in our industry.
“I’ll always be grateful for the time we spent together, the laughs we shared, and the things he taught me along the way. Rest in peace, Superstar. Thank you for being part of my journey. You will be missed.”
WWE icon William Regal wrote: “I’m sorry to hear of the passing of Bill Dundee. A lad born in Scotland who moved to Australia then came to the US and became a big star in the wrestling.
“We worked together when I first came here and he helped make my act work. My deepest condolences to his family. Rest well.”
AEW veteran Dustin Rhodes added: “Travelled up and down the Tennessee highways and sometimes lived with Bill back in the USWA DAYS. He was a great man and loved him.”
One grief-stricken fan wrote: “He was a brilliant wrestling mind and performer for decades. My thoughts and prayers are with his entire family.”
The Memphis Wrestling Hall of Famer stepped into the ring for his final match in 2019, bringing the curtain down on a career that spanned six decades.
